His initial 100 days were filled with promises kept to a variety of groups; Donald Trump made some significant changes during the very first days of his administration that will protect the unborn for years to come.
The man who once described himself as “very pro-choice” fulfilled his promise to his pro-life supporters to protect unborn babies in his very first weeks in office.
According to the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, President Trump has taken several key steps to spearhead the fight against abortion in our own nation and around the world. In addition to nominating pro-life conservatives to key positions in his own administration, going back as far as choosing Mike Pence as a running mate, President Trump is making America safer for the unborn.
In one of his first acts as president, Mr. Trump struck down a last-minute initiative designed to force states to fund Planned Parenthood and abortion services with taxpayer dollars. By removing the requirement that compelled states to fund abortions, President Trump took decisive action on the behalf of pro-lifers everywhere.
While the blocking of this last-ditch funding attempt will save many lives, the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and the defunding of the pro-abortion UNFPA will also have a huge impact on the state of abortion services in the nation and around the world.
Overturning Obama’s Last Minute HHS Regulation
In his final days in office, then-President Barack Obama passed a Health and Human Services regulation that was designed to compel states to fund Planned Parenthood via the existing Title X law. Despite objections, the Obama administration created a rule that actually forced states to provide funding to the largest abortion provider in the nation.
The last-minute regulation made it impossible for states to direct funds earmarked for abortion clinics to medical facilities that provided a more comprehensive lineup of services.
Planned Parenthood was to be the recipient of these funds; under the Obama ruling, the new regulation would have helped fund an abortion business that provides over 300,000 such procedures each year.
House Conservatives used the Congressional Review Act to stall the pending Obama regulation, and when President Trump came into office, he overturned the last-minute law, protecting the rights of the unborn.
By striking down the forced funding, President Trump ensured that individual states are not forced to fund procedures with taxpayer money. Instead, states are able to spend that money on more comprehensive offerings that truly improve the health and wellbeing of women and girls.
Thanks to conservative female senators such as Joni Ernst and President Trump, states can no longer be forced to provide funding for Planned Parenthood via the Title X program.
Cutting Off UNFPA Funding
Defunding the United Nations Population Fund was a key action taken by President Trump in April; this international program has long been suspected of supporting China’s One-Child Policy.
In addition to promoting abortions in the United States, the UNFPA has also been used to promote overseas abortions. Under President Obama, the US gave over 300 million to the UNFPA; President Trump’s defunding of this program will save the lives of both women and children around the world.
Successful Nomination Neil Gorsuch
Recently confirmed conservative Neil Gorsuch was selected by President Trump to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia.
This pro-life conservative judge is expected to follow in the footsteps of Scalia, who long stood in favor of protecting the unborn and helpless in our nation. By taking this important step, President Trump brings us closer to the day that Roe v. Wade could be overturned. One more conservative justice on the court could tip the balance in the favor of unborn babies and finally repeal the 1973 ruling.
The selection and confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch is a major victory for pro-life conservatives, and seen as a big step forward for those who wish to see the end of Planned Parenthood and similar institutions.
