Many conservatives view Vice President Mike Pence as a principled man of faith whose role is vital to the success of the Trump administration. But while he is highly respected and admired in the Christian community, Pence is despised by liberals.
In fact, LBGT lobbying giant the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) recently launched a nationwide initiative against the vice president. Vehemently opposing Pence’s Christian viewpoints regarding abortion, marriage, sexuality, and religious liberty, the left-leaning organization issued a scathing report about Pence earlier in April.
Besides the colorful 20-page report, the HRC also created a website and videos in its effort to demonize Pence. With menacing looking photos of Pence and ominous background music, the HRC’s new promotional materials will undoubtedly be utilized to frighten those who identify as being gay, lesbian, or transgender into giving the organization money.
According to the report, the vice president’s worst wrongdoings encompass his indisputable definition of marriage as a relationship between one man and one woman, his decision to sign the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” while he was Indiana’s governor, and his campaign to fight the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
In addition to these issues, the HRC also condemns the Pence for asking Congress to ban the United States military from funding “gender reassignment surgery.” The left-leaning organization also presumes Pence instigated President Trump’s “transgender military ban.” The HRC attacks the Vice President’s anti-abortion, pro-life stance as a part of his “nefarious agenda.”
Pence has led the national effort to defund Planned Parenthood. At a luncheon hosted by the Susan B. Anthony List and the Life Issues Institute in February of 2018, the Vice President boldly predicted the end of abortion in America will occur “in our time.”
“I hope you all feel encouraged today, because I know, I do,” Pence continued to say. “Having been in the cause all of my adult life, I see more progress in the last year in the cause of life than I have seen in public policy in all of my years.”
In a statement, HRC President Chad Griffin remarked, “Mike Pence has made a career out of attacking the rights and equal dignity of LGBTQ people, women and other marginalized communities. Now as vice president, he poses one of the greatest threats to equality in the history of our movement.”
Griffin reasoned, “With the world distracted by Donald Trump’s scandal-ridden White House, Mike Pence’s nefarious agenda has been allowed to fly under the radar for too long. He has become not only the most powerful vice president in American history, but also the least scrutinized.”
The HRC leader went on to say, “With this comprehensive new report, HRC is exposing the extent of Pence’s extremism, the threat he poses to equality, and all that we’re doing to combat his hateful agenda.”
Regarding the HRC campaign to smear Pence, Alyssa Farah, the Vice President’s press secretary, said, “This is just another politically motivated attack on the VP by a left-wing organization closely aligned with the Democratic Party.”
Rick Tyler, a Republican strategist, blames the targeting of Pence on a desire to raise money. He said, “Every special interest group, and Human Rights Campaign is not alone, has a bogey man, and theirs is Mike Pence.”
On April 14, 2018, more than 2,000 activists flooded the streets of Columbus, Indiana, the Vice President’s hometown, to attend a gay pride event. The occasion included a man dressed up as Pence as well as Drag wearing shirts mocking the vice president. A photograph from the affair captured a young woman wearing a t-shirt consisting of a picture of Pence, an LBGT rainbow flag, and the caption “Have a gay day.”
Commenting about the event, the HRC said, “Spearheaded by Columbus high school senior Erin Bailey, organizers say they hope the event will reflect the growing diversity and commitment to inclusion evident in their community, despite Pence’s deplorable legacy.”
